Two hefty Roman lead ingots (nicknamed “lead pigs”) have been declared treasure after being unearthed on grazing land in Ceredigion, west Wales. Dated to around AD 87 from their lettering, the pair are being hailed as the first Roman ingots of their kind recorded in west Wales, and they offer unusually direct evidence of Roman industrial activity in the region soon after conquest, reports Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales . The ingots were discovered by metal detectorists Nick Yallope and Peter Nicolas, who were searching with permission from the landowner, local farmer Geraint Jenkins.
