The world’s most powerful telescope, which was built ‘in search of our cosmic origins’ will be switched on today and has the potential to tell us more about where life on Earth came from. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array, or ALMA for short, is located deep in the Chilean desert at an altitude of 16,400 feet where it will be unaffected by pollution from artificial light, producing images that will be ten times sharper than those of the Hubble space telescope. It is hoped that it will provide answers to the mysteries of our origins by peering back to almost the first moments after the universe was formed.
